A new study conducted by the federal government indicates that people in several U.S. states were infected with SARS-CoV-2 in the U.S. earlier than previously thought, based on an analysis of blood donations. At least nine people in Illinois, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin demonstrated that they had developed COVID-19 antibodies in early January 2020, according to the National Institutes of Health study, published Tuesday in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. Federal health officials confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in the U.S. on Jan. 21, 2020. The NIH researchers examined 24,000 blood samples from 50 states between Jan. 2 and March 18, 2020. Because the antibodies were detected on Jan. 7 and 8 of that year, that means the virus was present in those states in December. (Antibodies take about two weeks to develop.)
