SAGINAW, MI - A mosquito-borne virus has been found within Saginaw County for the first time in 2021, according to a news release from the Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission.
The commission found Jamestown Canyon virus in a mosquito collected June 16 during routine disease surveillance, according to the release.
Jamestown Canyon virus is most common during late spring through mid fall in the upper Midwest, according to the CDC. Many infected people do not show symptoms, but those who do may encounter flu-like symptoms and fever. The virus can cause severe infections, including encephalitis and meningitis. About half of those reported to be infected are hospitalized, though death is rare and many cases go unnoticed.
The threat of infection is low but the commission suggests taking precautions to avoid mosquito bites, including wearing long clothing, using insect repellant that contains DEET, and eliminating patches of standing water.
The commission will monitor mosquito-borne viruses through the end of September. To help out, residents can call the office at 989-755-5751 to report standing water or a crow or blue joy that has been dead for less than 24 hours, which could be a sign of the West Nile virus.
