Three teenagers are responsible for vandalizing 17 vehicles in Arlington with “racist and vulgar” messages and will face charges, police said said Wednesday.
The vehicles were vandalized between Friday evening and Saturday morning in eastern and southern areas of the city, police said. Some of the phrases spray painted on the vehicles were anti-Black slurs. Other cars were vandalized with “vulgar phrases and images.”
Police said they do not believe the victims’ vehicles were specifically targeted.
“While some of the victims are Black, we also had white and Hispanic victims who had the same phrases spray painted on their vehicles,” department spokesman Tim Ciesco said Sunday.
Police said the three suspects are male teenagers. One is considered an adult in the Texas court system, meaning he is 17 years or older, and two are juveniles.
Charges will be filed against all three once investigators calculate the total amount of damage, but the three had not been taken into custody as of Wednesday morning, Ciesco said. Investigators have talked to the teens and their families, police said.
Surveillance video from the victims and their neighbors enabled detectives to locate a suspected vehicle Monday, Ciesco said, which led them to the suspects.
“These incidents didn’t just impact the people whose vehicles were vandalized — they affected and upset the entire Arlington community,” Chief Al Jones said in a written statement. “The phrases and images spray painted on the vehicles were deeply offensive and have no place in our city.”
