BAY CITY, MI - A graffiti “artist” recently left a string of vulgarities sprayed across Bay City’s east side. Now, local authorities are stepping in to clean it up and find out who is responsible for doing so.
The Bay City Department of Public Safety posted a callout on social media asking for the community’s help in identifying who left the obscene messages. According to the post, BCDPS received multiple reports of vandalism near the area surrounding Carroll Park and the Railtrail.
BCDPS posted photos of the graffiti but edited out vulgarities and offensive language.
News of the graffiti reached the Bay City Commission during the Monday, May 15 meeting. Commission president Jesse Dockett brought up the graffiti to the commission.
“I mean all graffiti is bad, but it’s extra bad graffiti if you catch what I’m saying,” Dockett said. “So if there’s something we can do about that.”
“I realize it’s probably two 14-year-olds that think they’re cool,” Dockett added. “But there’s gang affiliations and there’s racial slurs and there’s profanity, and there’s all kinds of other things that I think all of us agree we’d rather not have representing our city to people on the railtrail.”
Dockett noted that he noticed graffiti all the way out to the Young’s Ditch area and that a resident reached out to him with concerns about it.
City Manager Dana Muscott said that BCDPS director Caleb Rowell also received reports about it.
“He’s already started to get it cleaned up and I think they have a plan going forward for that,” she said.
Those with information about who may be responsible for the damage are asked to call the Bay City Department of Public Safety at 989-892-8571 from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, or to call the Bay County Central Dispatch non-emergency number of 989-892-9551 outside of those hours and ask to speak to an officer.
Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-JAIL (5245).
