STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — According to a new study, when it comes to sports fans who can’t get enough of spouting off naughty words, the Big Apple takes the crown.
OddsSeeker, which published the study, analyzed Reddit comments for each MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL team to see which league had the most fans letting bad words fly.
The data spans the year between March 15, 2022, and March 15, 2023.
“The lights shine brighter in New York. Maybe that makes it easier for fans to find themselves in their feels when their teams start to struggle,” the study said.
It’s apparently a case of the city that never bleeps, as Mets fans are the most prolific potty-mouths, averaging about 74.90 vulgar words per 100 subreddit subscribers, with their profanity of choice being the slightly lackluster: “Crap.”
Meanwhile, Yankees fans aren’t too innocent themselves, as they take fifth place with around 45.47 vulgar words, specifically the formidable: “a--hole.”
In the NBA, Knicks fans take the fourth spot with 21.88 uses, the most common unique profanity being “b----,” and Nets fans take the 10th position with 16.27 uses, most common being “d---.”
In the NFL, diehard Jets and Giants fans take the second and seventh spots, respectively, with 34.56 instances of “bulls---t” and 26.04 uses, including the less colorful “crap.”
And last, but certainly not pucking least, when it comes to NHL fans, the Rangers take their own top spot with 58.95 shots of “bulls--t.” While Islanders fans are more subdued with 10.90 uses, including “crap.”
“Some fan bases tend to be far more profane than others when discussing sports on Reddit,” the study surmised.
“In certain instances, they may be responding to a close loss or a questionable call by the officials. In other scenarios, they may be expressing long-term frustration about their team’s mediocrity or how the league is changing the rules of the game.”
