A brand new study has deemed Philadelphia as having the second most vulgar fan bases in the whole nation.

OddsSeeker was the one who published this study, leveraging text analysis of each MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL teams’ Reddit comments to see which had the most — shall we say — choice language. This data was pulled between March 15 2022 and March 15 2023.
Lo, it was the City of Brotherly Love that scored the number two spot on the final list, with Phillies fans being the worst of the bunch.
In fact, OddsSeeker found that Phillies fans averaged about 48.73 vulgar words per 100 subreddit subscribers, with their profanity of choice being…well, you’ll have to look at the actual study for that.
So who could possibly paint a verbal canvas with more vivid colorful language than someone from Philadelphia? What kind of person can top a population of sports fans who would cause George Carlin to clutch his pearls?
New York fans, is who.
Yup — New York fans took home the gold, with Mets supporters deemed the most vulgar of any of the Empire State’s franchises. They average a whopping 74.9 swearwords per 100 subreddit subscribers, and their choice word of choice was surprisingly tame — “crap.”
Rounding out the top five were Miami (fifth), Los Angeles (fourth), and St. Paul/Minneapolis (third).
“Fan bases tend to be far more profane than others when discussing sports on Reddit,” concludes the study. “In certain situations, they may be responding to a close loss or a questionable call by the officials. In other scenarios, they may be expressing long-term frustration about their team’s mediocrity or how the league is changing the rules of the game.
“One thing’s for sure: You can head to your team’s subreddit to get in on the fan base action next time there’s a big win or a controversial loss.”
