New York Yankees starting pitcher Nestor Cortes has mystified MLB fans with his bizarre yet effective style of pitching thus far in the 2022 season. The early American league Cy Young award favorite was at it again on Thursday, pitching seven scoreless innings to help lead New York to a victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Earlier in the day, Minnesota Twins broadcaster and Hall of Fame MLB pitcher Jim Kaat, who was calling the team’s game against the Detroit Tigers, came up with an insensitive nickname for Cortes, per Yahoo Sports.
Kaat was calling the Twins’ 3-2 loss to the Tigers in Detroit on Thursday, and brought up Cortes while Chris Archer was striking out Miguel Cabrera.
“‘Nestor the Molestor,’ Nestor Cortes,” Kaat said on the air. “Man he is fun to watch.”
Kaat, speaking about Cortes while Twins pitcher Chris Archer recorded a strikeout, referred to the Yankees southpaw as ‘Nestor the Molestor.’ Yikes.
There are many ways to describe Cortes’ quirky style of pitching but that is certainly not one of them. It’s definitely a comment that Kaat, who won 283 games in his 25-year MLB career, will want back.
Fortunately for the Twins analyst, Cortes addressed the comment after the Yankees victory, saying that he wasn’t offended by it, though it doesn’t change the fact that it shouldn’t have been said. Kaat was right about one thing.
Cortes, who ranks second in the MLB in ERA in the 2022 season, is very fun to watch. It’s safe to say that Kaat, who clearly misspoke, will find better ways to talk about Cortes’ pitching moving forward.
