Draymond Green initially shrugged off the vulgar chants directed at him from Celtics fans at TD Garden during the NBA Finals. But the chants actually did affect the Warriors star.
After the Warriors clinched another championship on Thursday night at TD Garden, Green admitted that he had never before heard anything like the chorus of chants that were sent his way in this series – most notably, “F*** you, Draymond!” – that were most noticeable in Game 3.
“Game 3, it just caught me off guard,” Green said. “Like you’ve heard crowds boo, and I never heard an entire crowd yell “F-you, Draymond.” That was a different thing. And then so you couple that with having a so-so game, and it’s like, ah, man.”
Green ultimately got the last laugh. As the Warriors reeled off three consecutive victories over the Celtics to win the title, Green – who became a Celtics villain after some antics in the first two games of the series – turned it around. He had his best game of the series, a near triple-double in the clinching win with 12 points – including two 3-pointers – 12 rebounds, eight assists and elite defense.
“Game 6, I dominated,” Green said.
He noticed the crowd wasn’t chanting at him much on Thursday.
“For me, I said what better time than to put it together tonight,” Green said. “I don’t think I heard “F-you, Draymond” all night. They couldn’t. So, you know, it’s easy to chant “F-you” when somebody is having a bad game, but can’t you do that when they’re having a great game? I didn’t hear much of it tonight. Maybe I was just that locked in.”
The Warriors ultimately took ownership of the chant. Inside the visitors locker room during their championship celebration, Green’s teammates were heard chanting, “F-you, Draymond!”
The Warriors became the second Celtics opponent in history to clinch the NBA title in Boston, joining the 1985 Lakers.
“Second team to win, close it out in TD Garden, right?” Green said. “Why not us? Who better than us?”
