Two 14-year-old boys are under arrest for allegedly commandeering a PA system on an Orange Line train and assaulting a woman who tried to intervene, the latest in a string of similar “unsettling incidents” committed by youths on the T.
Shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday, Transit Police officers responded to the MBTA’s Green Street station in Jamaica Plain after receiving multiple reports of juveniles who had “illegally gained access to the motor person’s cab of the train and were using vulgar, offensive and sexually-charged language on the PA system.”
Officers spoke with a woman, who told them that she was assaulted by the juveniles after she yelled at them. She said she told the boys, “You should be in school,” in response to the alleged vulgar announcements they had made over the public address system on an Orange Line train traveling between Jackson Square and Stony Brook, Transit Police said.
The confrontation occurred when the train arrived at the Green Street station, Transit Police said.
“Following that comment, the reporting party was struck in the back of the head by the juveniles,” Transit Police said. “The juveniles also made additional comments relative to what they wanted the reporting party/victim to do to them sexually.”
Transit Police said the two teenage boys were not cooperative, and were subsequently placed into custody. The juveniles will each be charged with assault and battery and trespassing.
MBTA spokesperson Joe Pesaturo said there have been other similar incidents of late that have involved youths taking over the PA system on trains.
“There have been some unsettling incidents in which youths have behaved imprudently by breaking into the cab in the middle of the train set — that’s where they gain access to the microphone for the PA system,” said Pesaturo.
“While the functional elements and controls for train operation are limited to the front cab in the train’s first car, this offensive conduct is disruptive, nonetheless,” he added, explaining that no one but the train operator has control over the movement of the train.
On May 25, Kate Darling, a Cambridge resident, posted on social media that she was riding a Red Line train when it was seemingly “hijacked.”
“It was driving erratically, someone was fooling around hollering through the intercom,” Darling said on Twitter. “Passengers were freaked out, called 911 — fortunately, we were all able to get out at Charles/MGH.”
When the Herald reached out to Darling for comment on Thursday, she did not respond but did address the incident in another tweet.
“Once I learned that it was kids on the PA and not someone unauthorized driving the train, I stopped taking press requests. Please consider writing about how the MBTA is underfunded instead of the kids,” she wrote.
Transit Police did not respond to a request for comment on what is being done to prevent these incidents from occurring.
