PATIALA: Bir Devinder Singh former Deputy Speaker of Vidhan Sabha today demanded ban on vulgar display of weighing the contesting candidates against coins.

In a statement here, he said that it was a common spectacle during elections that the contesting candidates are being weighed against coins to catch the public eye. A large weighing scales are colourfully decorated, especially for this purpose. Candidates of all hue joyfully volunteer themselves to be weighed against coins by their supporters. But no one ever tried to read and understand the subtle nuance of this mind-boggling spectacle; as to what message it precisely disseminates to the general public.

He added, quite interestingly, during my 72 years of age, I have never come across a meat-shop or a butchery outlet where a living bird or animal is weighed in scales and sold; it’s only the meat of dead animals or birds that are sold by weighing in the scale of the meat shop. Regrettably, it’s the politician alone who volunteer himself to be weighed against coins unlike animals, despite the fact that the futile exercise signifies nothing, except the manifestation of the hollowness of mind and comprehensively symptomatic of the sick consciousness.

Bir Devinder Singh said that now the question arises why a contesting candidate; who is perceived to be a potential law maker, should allow himself and his worth to be weighed against coins? Such despicable gestures do not indicate positive signals for the strengthening of democratic values or for the future of the State.

He said that the Election Commission of India must take cognizance of this futile exercise and make suitable amends in the model code of conduct banning the public display of weighing of contesting candidates against coins because it not only violates the spirit of democratic values, it also impinge the fundamental postulates of the Representation of the People Act. 1951.
