The Alabama infant and teenager who died from coronavirus had preexisting conditions, the Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed.

On Wednesday, the ADPH confirmed the two deaths – the first in the state among anyone younger than 24 – but at the time listed the deaths under those without preexisting conditions. As of June 12, Alabama has had 764 coronavirus deaths, 31 of those among people who had no preexisting conditions.

ADPH has now changed its count and moved the pediatric deaths to the underlying condition category.

“The two deaths were removed from the "Deaths with No Underlying Conditions" category,” ADPH said. “After further investigation, it was discovered that the infant and teenager who died did have underlying medical conditions.”

Neither patient had Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome-Children, the coronavirus-linked condition that’s been reported among young COVID patients.

Roughly 96% of Alabama’s coronavirus deaths are among patients who have preexisting conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or renal disease. Of all the state’s COVID deaths, 79% are 65 years of age or older. The median age for COVID deaths among those without preexisting conditions is 71, with 68 percent older than age 65.
