Wisconsin coronavirus activity level bumped up to 'high' by health department as state reports 432 new cases - The Sheboygan Press

Released Tuesday, the state health department's new rating of coronavirus activity rose from "medium" to "high" on Wednesday.

The Department of Health Services also reported 432 new positive tests, the most since June 4, and positives accounted for 4.2% of test results, the second-highest rate since May 30.

Wednesday's positivity rate was still below the state's total rate of 5%, which fell steadily through May and early June, and there has not been evidence of increased spread on the scale reported in many southern and western states.

Also, while hospitalizations may lag infections by a few days, the number of Wisconsin inpatients has recently held steady at its lowest levels since early April, according to the Wisconsin Hospital Association's online dashboard. There were 239 known COVID-19 inpatients Wednesday morning, of whom 89 were in intensive care.

Seven more deaths were reported Wednesday, bringing the statewide toll to 757.

More: What's your Wisconsin county's coronavirus activity level? The state has assigned it a 'high,' 'medium' or 'low' label.

DHS' activity ratings measure Wisconsin and its counties by their confirmed cases per 100,000 residents over the past two weeks, as well as the percent change in new cases over that time. Those case counts and trajectories are then combined to assign an overall label of "high," "medium" or "low" activity.

Wisconsin moved up from "medium" to "high" on Wednesday based on a "moderately high" case rate of 72 per 100,000 and an increase of 24%.

Twenty-two counties were listed as having "high" activity, with Dane, Eau Claire, Manitowoc, Marathon, Monroe and Waukesha moving up into that category, and Fond du Lac, Forest and Sheboygan moving down to "medium" status.
