TELL YOU ABOUT THIS TODAY? HEY THERE. CHRISTINA. DEVONTE. WELL, PHYSICIANS WITH NOVANT HEALTH AND WAKE FOREST BAPTIST TELL ME THAT THEY’RE SEEING A LOT OF DIFFERENT RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES. THAT’S INCLUDING THE FLU, RSV AND COVID. THEY DID SAY, THOUGH, THIS IS NORMAL FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. COCO COLD TYPE SYMPTOMS SUCH AS RUNNY NOSE, WATERY EYES, CONGESTION AND SNEEZING. BY SOME ACCOUNTS, THERE ARE OVER 200 DIFFERENT VIRUSES THAT CAN CAUSE THESE ILLNESSES, MANY OF WHICH HAVE VERY SIMILAR SYMPTOMS FROM THE COMMON COLD TO BRONCHITIS. AREA PHYSICIANS SAY THEY’RE SEEING IT ALL. NOVANT HEALTH EVEN PLACED RESTRICTIONS ON VISITORS AT THEIR HOSPITALS DUE TO THE RISE IN RESPIRATORY VIRUSES. WHAT WE LEARNED, ESPECIALLY DURING THE COVID YEARS, WAS THAT WE HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL AND MINDFUL OF WHEN WHEN WE SEE A RISE IN THESE VIRUSES AROUND THIS TIME OF THE YEAR, NO MATTER WHAT IT IS, THOUGH, PHYSICIANS SAY THEY ARE ALL EASILY SPREADABLE, ESPECIALLY RIGHT NOW WHEN GATHERINGS ARE SET TO TAKE PLACE. YOU’VE BEEN TAKING CARE OF A LOVED ONE THAT’S BEEN EXPERIENCING THOSE SIMILAR SYMPTOMS, YET YOU MAY NOT BE EXPERIENCING THEM YOURSELF. YOU MAY BE CARRYING THAT VIRUS WITH YOU. THE NUMBER ONE THING THAT YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF IS TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU’RE HEALTHY AND TO PROTECT THE OTHER FOLKS THAT YOU MAY BE GETTING TOGETHER WITH IS IF YOU ARE SICK, YOU HAVE TO STAY HOME. AND IF YOU AREN’T SICK, TAKING THOSE PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID GETTING SICK IS ALSO IMPORTANT. WE GET THESE ILLNESSES FROM OTHER PEOPLE. WE DON’T GET THEM FROM BEING OUTSIDE WHEN IT’S COLD. EVEN IF YOU FORGET TO WEAR YOUR JACKET, WE GET THEM BECAUSE WE’RE AROUND TO OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE SICK. SO WASHING YOUR HANDS, MAKING SURE THAT YOU STAY HOME IF YOU’RE SICK, AND ENCOURAGING YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY THAT IF THEY’RE SICK TO ALSO STAY HOME ARE REALLY THE BEST WAYS TO PREVENT YOURSELF FROM GETTING SICK IN THE FIRST PLACE. AND PHYSICIANS ALSO SAY IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING A JUST MINOR RESPIRATORY VIRUS SYMPTOMS TO AVOID GOING TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM IN ORDER TO FREE UP THEIR TIME FOR EMERGENCIES. IF YOU CAN TREAT THE SICKNESS WITH HOME REMEDIES, THEY SAY T

Triad area doctors say the rise of respiratory illnesses is normal for this time of year. Dr. John Card, an adult primary care physician at Novant Health, said he's been seeing patients come in with "a lot of cough, cold type symptoms, such as runny nose, watery eyes, congestion, sneezing." Although Card said, it's hard just to tell which illness may be causing symptoms since they can be very similar. “By some accounts, there are over 200 different viruses that can cause these illnesses, many of which have very similar symptoms," said Dr. Michael Fitch, an emergency medicine physician with Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. Novant Health even placed restrictions on visitors at their hospitals due to the rise in respiratory viruses. "What we've learned, especially during the COVID years, was that we have to be very careful and mindful, when when we see a rise of these viruses around this time of the year," Card said.No matter what illness it is though, Card and Fitch say they all are easily spreadable, especially right now when gatherings are set to take place.“The number one thing that you can do to protect yourself to make sure that you're healthy, and to protect the other folks that you may be getting together with is if you are sick, you have to stay home," Fitch said. Card said even if you've been taking care of someone who is sick and you yourself aren't sick, you still may be carrying the virus with you."We know that this is a time of the year that we want to be around loved ones and family and friends and just enjoy the spirit of the of the holiday season. However, in order to really help them, giving them the best gift is to try to help keep them healthy as well, too," Card said. Even if you aren’t sick or have been around anyone who is sick, taking those precautions to avoid getting sick is also important."We get these illnesses from other people. We don't get them from being outside when it's cold, even if you forget to wear your jacket, we get them because we're around other people who are sick. So washing your hands, making sure that you stay home if you're sick and encouraging your friends and family that if they're sick to also stay home are really the best ways to prevent yourself from getting sick in the first place," Fitch said. Doctors also say to avoid going to the emergency room if you have minor respiratory virus symptoms. "They are getting overwhelmed with these type of things that, in all honesty, can be managed outside of the emergency room," Card said. If you can treat the sickness with home remedies, they say to do so.
