STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Warning: This news story may contain foul language. But, New Yorkers, it seems, aren’t the ones most likely to use it, according to a recent social media study that found New York City to be one of America’s least foul-mouthed cities.

In fact, New York City was found to be the second-least foul-mouthed city in the United States, according to researchers for WordTips, an online word-search tool, who pored over thousands of expletive-laden tweets to find out which cities had the filthiest mouths.

And whether you find swear words vulgar or use them casually in conversation, there is no doubt that profanity is becoming more common and acceptable in our society. Nowhere is it more obvious than on social media, the study found.

The talk was toughest on Twitter in Atlanta, America’s most foul-mouthed city, with 56 swear words per 1,000 words posted, researchers found.

Stockton, California, followed with 53 swear words per thousand, and our neighbor, Newark, N.J., tied with El Paso, Texas, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, with 50 bad words per 1,000.

That makes New Yorkers look like choirboys.

We posted just 19 swear words per 1,0000 words, bested only by the goodie-goodies in Minneapolis, Minnesota, who used only 17.

To discover each state’s most often-used swear words, the WordTips researchers gathered tweets from every state and the top 320 most populated cities in the U.S., filtered the tweets by considering only tweets that were written in English and allowing a maximum of one tweet per user per day. They collected data on a selection of vulgar words and some variations between Jan. 1, 2021 and June 6, 2022.

Through the research, they discovered the most commonly-used swear words on social media.

As you might have guessed, the word Martin Scorsese used 506 times in his script for “Wolf of Wall Street” in 2013 is a word now synonymous with popular culture. The word “f---” was used 11.62 times for every 1,000 posts on twitter in the U.S. during the study, while “s---” was used 10 times, followed by “damn” at 4.31 and “hell,” at 3.27.

But not every state has the same swear word of choice.

The research found that 15 states, including New York, prefer “s---,’’ as their swear word of choice, more than “f---,’’ which is most popular in 13 states.

An east/west divide was noted in the data, as the majority of states in the South and East of the U.S. use “s---,” while three of the four states in the Pacific time zone (and Hawaii) prefer “f---.”
