NEW JERSEY — Jersey residents are known for their sarcastic, and often vulgar, sense of humor — particularly when they're behind the wheel.
Getting the middle finger flashed at you while driving on the Garden State Parkway is practically a rite of passage in the state.
This indecent sense of humor also extends to Jersey license plates, as many residents have tried to request some dirty, personalized plates to adorn their cars. But the Motor Vehicle Center isn't having it, and has rejected more than 1,300 license plates last year due to their vulgarity, according to the New Jersey Herald.
Some of the PG-rated plates that the MVC rejected included phrases like "SUCKIT," "N0T2DAY," "LOUDAF" and "BISHBYE." You can imagine what some of the R-rated ones were.
Obtaining a personalized license plate seems easy enough. The MVC requires that you own a vehicle and have not had your license revoked or suspended. You also can't have any DWIs or convictions for killing someone with your car.
But coming up with a phrase that the MVC approves of may be a challenge. Personalized plates that are too vulgar, too long or already taken can be rejected by the MVC.
An MVC spokesperson told the NJ Herald that the most common reason for rejection is that the plate combination is already reserved for other special plates in New Jersey.
Here's a selection of some of the rejected plates by the MVC in 2021. In comparison to some of the R-rated ones, these are relatively tame:
- B00TY
- WISEASS
- BADA5S
- SMARTAS
- TURD
- LMAOO
According to the NJ Herald, residents who want their name printed on their plates will likely face rejection, as most are already taken. Several brand names, like "HONDA" and "TESLA" as well as variations like "TE5LA," were also denied last year.
Many COVID-19-related plates were rejected in 2021, as well. This includes variations like "C8VID19" and "CORONA."
