I attended Coe College from 1969 to 1973, and knew Dr. Darryl Banks for three of those years when we were both undergraduate students. He graduated from Coe a year ahead of me, then left for Oxford University as a Rhodes scholar where he earned a D. Phil. in chemistry. Dr. Banks served as a Coe trustee for 40 years.
I never regarded Coe as "progressive," but I always expect it to be enlightened. Thus, I was surprised to learn from the article in The Gazette that an uncivil remark was directed toward Dr. Banks by a fellow Coe trustee. Dr. Banks is a refined gentleman who would never use that kind of language speaking to someone. I was disappointed to read that the chair (who I also knew when we were both students at Coe) didn’t immediately call out this board member for his uncivil remark. The chair failed to speak up when the situation called for a response. It speaks well of trustee Alan Anderson that he stood with Dr. Banks and resigned to protest.
Dr. Banks is married to a Yale Law School graduate. Their three children attended top U.S. universities and are successfully pursuing their own careers. Dr. Banks brought nothing but honor and service to Coe. If you were a private liberal arts college, you would want Dr. Banks on your board of trustees. For a Coe trustee (who has apparently since apologized) to direct vulgarity toward Dr. Banks is beyond the pale.
