SALT LAKE CITY — Among the more than 5 million deaths worldwide due to COVID-19 were another 29 people in Utah whose deaths were reported Monday.

The total number of Utahns who have died because of COVID-19 has reached 3,237, according to the Utah Department of Health, which released a tally of cases and fatalities confirmed through the weekend.

The weekend report includes:

1,615 new COVID-19 cases on Friday
637 cases on Saturday
973 cases on Sunday

School-aged children account for 594 or about 18% of Monday's newly reported cases, including 315 cases in children ages 5-10, 127 cases in children ages 11-13, and 152 cases in children ages 14-17 since Friday.

The state reports 3,759,031 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, including 27,759 since Friday. At least 1.95 million people — 61% of the population in Utah — have received at least one dose of the available vaccines and 1.75 million (54.7%) are fully vaccinated, according to health department data.

Utah's health department reports that in the last 28 days, people who are unvaccinated are at 15.8 times greater risk of dying from COVID-19, which is three times greater than the week prior. Data shows that unvaccinated Utahns are at 11 times greater risk of being hospitalized due to COVID-19, and 5.2 times greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19 than vaccinated people.

Since Feb. 1, people in Utah who are unvaccinated are at 8.6 times greater risk of dying from COVID-19, 7.3 times greater risk of being hospitalized due to COVID-19, and 3.6 times greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19 than vaccinated people in Utah, according to the data. The risk to unvaccinated people in Utah has steadily increased as more cases involving the delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 have been detected.

More than 18,000 people in Utah were tested for the novel coronavirus this weekend, bringing the total number of people tested to 3.7 million since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020. The health department reports more than 6.7 million tests have been utilized in the state since then.

The rolling, seven-day average for positive tests is 1,506 per day; whereas, the average number of people testing positive is now around 17.3% of all people getting tested for the virus.

Among the newly reported COVID-19 deaths was Unified Fire Authority Capt. Merrill Bone. Bone was a 36-year veteran of the fire service and joined Unified Fire Authority in 2006. His death resulted from COVID-19 complications and was recognized as a death in the line of duty. An end-of-watch procession was held Sunday, from Intermountain Medical Center through downtown Salt Lake City.

Utah Sen. Mike Lee offered his condolences to Bone's family on Twitter.

"My prayers are with Captain Bone's family. His service and dedication were sealed with his life. We honor him and those rescuers that served with him for all they do to serve our communities and our state," Lee said.

Three Salt Lake County women and two men, all 45-64, all hospitalized.

There are 534 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 across Utah, which is nine more than last Monday's report. The total number of people in Utah who have been hospitalized since the pandemic began is 24,147.
