Altmar, N.Y. – Neal E. Braley’s vulgar, racist and pro-Trump display outside of the former Redneck Roadside Retreat has been a source of controversy in Oswego County.
Last year, Braley, 84, covered his closed business in pro-Trump and anti-Black Lives Matter flags and signs. He hanged a hazmat-suited dummy from a rope next to a Confederate flag. A sign welcomed the Proud Boys to Altmar.
The words “white lives matter” were spray-painted across Cemetery Street, the public road next to the property, which local officials left alone.
Until now, local officials did not take action against Braley’s graffiti. Albion Town Clerk Amy Ford told Syracuse.com | Post Standard in 2020 that the town would allow the salt and snow to wash away the words.
In September, Albion Town Supervisor Michael Faulkner received a photo of Braley spray-painting the words “F - - k Biden” on Cemetery Street, according to Trooper Jack Keller, a state police spokesperson. Faulkner contacted the state police and shared the photo with them, he said.
On Sept. 28, state police arrested Braley and charged him with making graffiti, Keller said. The charge is a misdemeanor; Braley was issued an appearance ticket, he said.
Braley was not charged for his graffiti on Cemetery Street in 2020 but was issued a warning, Ford said. His newest slogan has already been paved over, she said.
In 2020, Braley told a reporter that his display was intended to be divisive and attract attention.
Braley said his favorite display in 2020 was a portable toilet with the words “Biden votes” painted on the toilet seat lid. Braley told Syracuse.com that he collects horse feces, left behind by Amish horse-drawn buggies, at the local Dollar General for the toilet.
“To me, it’s just funny,” Braley said. “I’ve been doing this kind of stuff for the last 50 years.”
Last year, images of the display made their way outside of the deep red, Republican-leaning town, around the region and even the nation, via social media.
In just one day, Braley said he got more than 50 calls about his signs. The display ignited an “anti-hate” rally and earned the condemnation of local politicians, even a congressman.
State and county law enforcement were there at least six times last year, but they did not order Braley to take down the signs, they said.
Some residents called for public officials to step in and take down the display.
