Raleigh, N.C. — The family of one of the students involved in the vulgar St. David's School video that surfaced last month is responding, emphasizing that their son is not a racist.
After the clip surfaced on social media, an online petition saw hundreds of signatures pushing for the students to be expelled. The five-second clip of cellphone video showed one student holding a beer can, and both said the N-word several times.
The school later confirmed both students were no longer enrolled as both withdrew from the school. One attorney told WRAL the boys were initially suspended for seven days.
On Wednesday, the family, who wished to remain anonymous, wrote in part:
"Our family apologizes for the role of our son in this incident and does not condone the language contained in the lyrics used in the Snapchat exchange. Our son has been wrongly portrayed by the school administrators he has trusted for many years at St. David's as a racist. Our son is not a racist, but rather a teenager who made a mistake."
Another attorney contends that the administrators at the school denied the boys due process.
