Vallejo Police Department Watch Command notes from Monday’s vocal protest of the VPD’s new CARE center called protesters “vulgar” and “rude.”
The log, which appears to have been taken by Lt. Sanjay Ramrakha, reports that protesters blocked the route into and out of the gated parking lot at 400 Mare Island Way, a building where the VPD has begun some operations, despite no official OK from the Vallejo City Council or information from the city manager about cost details.
The Watch Commander log refers to the protestors as “hostile” and using “vulgar tones,” and that they “remained rude, angry, and threatening throughout the protest.”
Around 50 protesters showed up to decry the opening of the Community Assistance Resource and Engagement center to assist and advocate for victims of crime. At several points during the demonstrations, protesters blocked the gates and halted vehicles from entering.
The log says that the crowd included members of the city council, though only one member was at the demonstration, Councilmember Tina Arriola.
At one point Alicia Saddler, the sister of Angel Ramos, who was shot and killed by a VPD officer in front of her 9-year-old son, screamed at Lt. Todd Tribble, who was on the other side of the gate along with a sworn officer and a cadet.
“Let that be your son!” she shouted, “How would you feel?”
Saddler used curse words and said, “How about a bullet to your head?” to the Lieutenant.
The Watch Command log said that “efforts to converse were met with derision.”
Protester Anne Carr told the Times-Herald that it was the police who blocked the protestors from gaining access to the event.
“(VPD) blocked citizens and members of the press from attending the opening of a community resource, thus abusing public property and violating the First Amendment rights of freedom to assemble, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press,” she said.
Protesters carried signs, chanted, banged pot lids together, and shouted out the names of people killed by VPD officers. A few in the crowd pointed at Lt. Tribble and yelled “Shawny shame!” and “Defund the police!” in earshot of the Times-Herald.
The Times-Herald reached out to the VPD for comment but had not heard back by press time.
