Almost a year exactly after Michigan recorded its first case of COVID-19 on March 10, 2020, just over 1 million residents have been fully vaccinated and health workers across the state are preparing to expand vaccination eligibility to all adults.

On Friday, March 12, state officials announced all Michiganders 16 years and older will be eligible for vaccination starting April 5.

That same day, state officials also expanded who would become eligible for a shot beginning March 22.

Previously, anyone age 50 to 64 was slated to become eligible for vaccination on March 22. Now, any resident 16 or older with disabilities or medical conditions that put them at higher risk will become eligible that day.

As more people become eligible for the shot, state officials want vaccine providers to continue prioritizing people most at risk of exposure due to employment and those most vulnerable to a severe case of COVID-19.

Health departments across the state are gradually working through the previous eligibility phases, and have received positive forecasts on upcoming shipments.

In all, 1,824,772 first doses and 1,010,866 second doses of vaccine have been administered statewide.
