MADISON, Wis. — While Wisconsin has now seen more than one million people be fully vaccinated from COVID-19, local doctors say there’s still a long way to go before we approach herd immunity.
They say 70 to 80 percent of the population needs to be immune before herd immunity can be considered. That can happen either through vaccination or natural disease, which Dr. Nasia Safdar of UW Health says no one wants to see more of.
She says when herd immunity happens depends on how quickly vaccine supply is rolled out, and how many people end up taking advantage of the free vaccines.
“One is the vaccine supply and the other is that the population at the other end has to be willing to take the vaccine once it’s offered,” Dr. Safdar says.
She thinks herd immunity is possible for some parts of the population by the summer, but points out there’s only one vaccine approved for people ages 16 to 18 right now, and none approved for younger ages.
