California is opening up vaccine eligibility to individuals 50 and over on Thursday. In addition, everyone 16 and older will be eligible April 15.
While state officials expect a surge in vaccine supply in April, there will likely not be enough appointments immediately available for those who want a shot.
The state's MyTurn website is the central hub for finding vaccine appointments, everywhere from the Oakland Coliseum mass vaccine site to Safeway pharmacies.
It's now allowing those 50 and over to book an appointment, but keep in mind that you may have to check the site for several days before finding availability. Appointments are added regularly but disappear quickly. We looked Wednesday morning for appointments in San Francisco and couldn't find any.
The state is also encouraging people with health insurance to check in with their providers. Kaiser sent a message to members on Tuesday alerting them of the expanding eligibility and limited supply.
"We haven’t received enough doses yet to vaccinate everyone who’s eligible," Kaiser wrote in an email. "In Northern California, Kaiser Permanente has over 900,000 members 50 to 64, and over 2 million members 16 to 49, yet we receive 55,000 to 75,000 doses each week."
Many pharmacies, including CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens, are offering vaccines; you can go directly to their websites to look for appointments. You can find a full list of pharmacies offering vaccines on the California Department of Public Health website.
You can also check in with your county public health department for information on getting vaccinated at community clinics (find vaccine information for every county below). All counties are falling in line with the state guidelines and launching efforts to begin vaccinating those 50 and over, while Contra Costa has already opened up eligibility to those 16 and over.
Finally, the website VaccinateCA, which is run by a group of volunteers who call hospitals and pharmacies for vaccine availability, is a great resource for finding appointments.
