Coronavirus in Oregon: State reports 393 cases, 4 new deaths - OregonLive

The Oregon Health Authority announced 393 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday along with four new deaths, raising the state’s coronavirus death toll to 2,023. Case counts are often lower on weekends due to reporting delays.

The newly identified infections come as Oregon prepares to open widespread vaccinations to people 80 and older on Monday.

Oregon will be one of the last states in the country to begin vaccinating seniors after Brown made teachers and other early learning workers eligible earlier in the process in a push to reopen schools. Advocates worry the state doesn’t have a targeted plan to ensure vulnerable seniors can get vaccinated.

Despite Gov. Kate Brown’s recent assertion that all senior care residents have been able to get a shot of the coronavirus vaccine, hundreds of assisted living homes statewide have not yet been offered the first round of the vaccine. More than 1,200 of the state’s 1,400 adult foster homes have also not been signed up to receive vaccines. Brown’s office later said she only meant to refer to nursing homes.

Oregon Health Authority Director Patrick Allen said after most Oregonians in the early waves are inoculated, the state could open up vaccination eligibility to new groups by early April — such as other essential workers and people with underlying conditions.

The four deaths announced Sunday were all among people age 78 or older.

Who died: The 2,020th death is an 82-year-old Multnomah County resident who tested positive Nov. 19 and died Nov. 29 at their residence. Gender is being confirmed.

The 2,021st death is an 89-year-old Jackson County woman who tested positive Jan. 11 and died Feb. 4 at her residence.

The 2,022nd death is a 78-year-old Marion County woman who tested positive Jan. 22 and died Feb. 5 at Salem Hospital.

The 2,023rd death is a 93-year-old Marion County man who tested positive Jan. 26 and died Feb. 5 at Salem Hospital.

Unless noted above, each person who died had underlying health conditions or state officials were working to determine if the person had underlying medical conditions.

The prevalence of infections: On Saturday, the state reported 466 new positive tests out of 12,381 tests performed, equaling a 3.8% positivity rate.

Who’s in the hospital: The state reported 230 Oregonians with confirmed coronavirus infections were hospitalized Sunday, two more than Saturday. Of those, 53 coronavirus patients were in intensive care units, one more than Saturday.

Vaccines administered: Oregon has administered 554,145 first and second doses out of 734,950 received, which is 75.4% of its supply. Oregon reported 21,694 newly administered doses, which includes 17,940 on Saturday and the remainder from previous days.

Since it began: Oregon has reported 147,122 confirmed or presumed infections and 2,023 deaths, among the lowest per capita numbers in the nation. To date, the state has reported over 3,304,822 lab reports from tests.
