Massachusetts health officials on Saturday reported another 5,356 cases of coronavirus, with about 54,199 cases currently active in the state.
Those cases are based on 106,116 new molecular tests. The seven-day average positivity rate stands at 5.4%, up from a low of 0.8% over the summer, according to data from the Department of Public Health. Not including higher education tests, that rate is at 7.45%. Testing has been frequent at colleges, which have a seven-day average positivity rate of 0.48%, according to DPH.
Officials on Saturday also announced another 41 deaths related to confirmed COVID-19 cases. Through the pandemic, Massachusetts has seen at least 242,812 coronavirus cases and 10,715 deaths.
Currently, 1,428 people are hospitalized with the virus, 283 of whom are in intensive care units. Hospitalizations have been increasing for weeks. The seven-day average number of confirmed patients in the hospital is 1,264, up from a previous low of 155, according to DPH.
A field hospital at the DCU Center in Worcester is slated to open Sunday to help manage virus cases as more people are hospitalized. Another field hospital is planned for Lowell.
Currently, 97 communities in the state are considered at high risk for spreading the virus. Massachusetts education officials said this week that 276 students and 251 staffers had tested positive for COVID between Nov. 26 and Dec. 2.
The federal government plans to send Massachusetts nearly 60,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine in a first shipment, the office of Gov. Charlie Baker announced Friday evening. Emergency use authorization has been sought for vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna.
