The Oregon Health Authority reported 1,290 new coronavirus cases and six deaths Sunday as infections are forecast to continue to climb.

It’s the smallest number of new Oregon cases reported since Thursday and falls below the 1,534 daily average for new cases reported for the preceding week. But case counts can vary from day to day and tend to fall during the weekend.

Sunday’s numbers come two days after Oregon shattered a record with 2,176 new confirmed or presumptive cases and 30 fatalities announced on Friday by Oregon Gov. Kate Brown.

Coronavirus infections are expected to continue to rise.

Also on Friday, the state released new modeling that showed Oregon could, in a best-case scenario, see an average of 2,000 confirmed cases per day by Christmas Eve. If the spread of the virus accelerates, that number could climb as high as 2,700 cases.

Health officials did report a slight decline in the number of Oregonians hospitalized with coronavirus infections overnight. There were 546 patients with confirmed cases in the state’s hospitals, a decrease of 10 from Saturday. The state also said there were 113 coronavirus patients in intensive care units, five fewer than Saturday.

The number of coronavirus hospitalizations is nonetheless about two and a half times higher than a month ago.

New deaths:

The 1,028th fatality is an 81-year-old woman in Coos County. She tested positive on Nov. 6 and died on Nov. 24 at Bay Area Hospital. She had underlying conditions.

The 1,029th fatality is a 62-year-old woman in Douglas County. She tested positive on Nov. 13 and died on Dec. 4 at Mercy Medical Center. Presence of underlying conditions is being confirmed.

The 1,030th fatality is an 89-year-old man in Marion County. He tested positive on Nov. 26 and died on Dec. 5 at Salem Hospital. He had underlying conditions.

The 1,031st fatality is an 86-year-old woman in Marion County. She tested positive on Nov. 27 and died on Dec. 2 at Salem Hospital. She had underlying conditions.

The 1,032nd fatality is a 58-year-old man in Multnomah County. He tested positive on Nov. 1 and died on Dec. 5 at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. He had no underlying conditions.

The 1,033rd fatality is an 87-year-old woman in Polk County. She tested positive on Nov. 16 and died on Dec. 2 at her residence. She had underlying conditions.

Who’s in the hospital: The state reported 546 Oregonians with confirmed coronavirus infections are currently in the hospital. The state also said there were 113 coronavirus patients in intensive care units.

Since it began: Oregon has reported 84,496 confirmed or presumed infections and 1,033 deaths, among the lowest totals in the nation.
