COVID-19 cases in Santa Clara County have surged in recent days, and local health officials are asking the public to follow mask-wearing and social-distancing guidelines with "strict adherence."

The county reported 358 new cases Sunday. This is the second highest number since the record 385 of cases reported in the county on July 15.

Nearly all these cases are from tests conducted in the past week, and about half in the past three days, county health officials said in a statement released Monday.

What's more, hospitalizations on Sunday increased nearly 10%.

Dr. Sara Cody, health officer and director of the Santa Clara County Public Health Department, said in a statement released Monday that the surge in cases is concerning with the upcoming holiday and cold-weather season, as people will be tempted to move social activities indoors.

"Indoor dining, gathering in private homes with people outside of one’s household, and becoming complacent with 'pandemic fatigue,' all elevate the risk of COVID-19 transmission," the news release said.

"New cases and resulting hospitalizations are increasing locally, regionally, as well as statewide and across the country and the world," Cody said in the release. "These trends serve as a stark reminder that COVID-19 is all around us. Each and every one of us needs to redouble our efforts to keep our community safe.”

Santa Clara County advanced to the orange tier Oct. 13 in the state's reopening plan, which dictates when businesses can reopen based on new cases and hospitalizations. The moved led county officials to allow many activities to resume, and indoor dining reopened at 25% capacity.

Board of Supervisors President Cindy Chavez said in a statement that it's imperative the community follows health guidelines so these businesses can remain open.

“Everyone appreciates the additional options that come from being in a less-restrictive tier,” Chavez said. “But we all need to be mindful that being in that tier doesn’t mean some activities do not come with certain risk, and that risk is greatly magnified if businesses and customers do not follow the rules in place to help keep them safe.”

While Santa Clara is seeing the most significant surge in cases among the nine Bay Area counties, the entire region is seeing a recent uptick.

"The Bay Area and California reported the most new cases of coronavirus since late August on Saturday, an upward trend that experts say is another indicator of a possible third wave of infections happening across the country," the Bay Area News Group reported.
