The Lehigh Valley surpassed 20,000 total coronavirus cases on Saturday as more than 8,000 new cases were reported across Pennsylvania.
Statewide, cases of COVID-19 now total 351,667 since the pandemic was detected here in March. The statewide death toll rose to 10,275 as 41 more residents died from coronavirus-related illness.

As of Saturday, 4,114 people were hospitalized for COVID-19, far more than the springtime’s prior peak.
The Pennsylvania health department is reporting thousands of new cases daily, but Saturday’s update – 8,053 new cases – was just the second time the state surpassed 8,000 in a single day. The first was two days earlier on Thanksgiving, when the state set a daily record of 8,425 newly reported cases.
Locally, the Lehigh Valley’s two counties – which as of Saturday combined for 20,182 total cases since the start of the pandemic – have each lately seen daily case reports increasing into the hundreds, according to the state’s data.

It took 197 days for the Lehigh Valley to log its first 10,000 cases, but just 64 days for its second 10,000.
Northampton County had 236 new cases reported Saturday alone, so far the county’s highest single-day report. Lehigh County had 298 new cases reported Saturday, one day removed from its own record of 315.
One death was reported Saturday in Northampton County, bringing the Lehigh Valley’s combined COVID-19 death toll to 714 people.
