For the third consecutive day, Florida hit the highest number of single-day coronavirus cases recorded, adding 2,581 over 24 hours.
The addition brings the state total to 73,552 recorded infections. The state also added 49 deaths on Saturday, bringing the number of people who have died since the start of the pandemic to 3,016. Hospitalizations in the state among residents and non-residents increased by 129 people.

What’s the picture statewide?
Florida health officials have held firm that the higher cases are because of expanded testing. More than 1.37 million Floridians have been tested, about 6 percent of the state’s population.
Of those tested, 5.4 percent of the tests have come back positive, a slight uptick from the previous few days where only 5.3 percent of tests came back positive.
On Thursday, the state had its largest single-day number of recorded cases, with 1,698 new recorded cases. On Friday, the state recorded 1,902 cases, paling in comparison to Saturday’s 2,581 infections. That means Florida has added more than 6,100 cases since Thursday.
Analysis from the Miami Herald shows the rise in positive cases cannot be explained by increased testing alone. ProPublica, a nonprofit news organization, has said the number of positive cases per 100,000 tests in Florida has been on the rise.
Over the past week, Florida has averaged about 35 deaths, holding close to the weekly averages from mid-May.

Tampa Bay saw two new recorded deaths Saturday, one in Manatee County and one in Polk County.
The area also added 480 new cases, about 19 percent of the new daily cases seen statewide.
Hillsborough County had the largest single-day jump yet, with 209 cases added, and Pinellas County also saw a single-day case increase of 162.
Local leaders have expressed concern over the increased cases in the area, which were especially ticking upward among young people. Dr. Douglas Holt, the director for the Hillsborough County Department of Health, called it a crossroads for the area.

Doctors say older people are at a greater risk to developing severe symptoms from COVID-19, which makes Florida especially vulnerable.

The new deaths recorded Saturday include an 86-year-old Manatee woman and a 81-year-old Polk woman.
As of the latest counts, Hillsborough has 3,504 cases and 102 deaths; Pinellas has 2,103 cases and 103 deaths; Polk has 1,414 cases and 75 deaths; Manatee has 1,353 cases and 117 deaths; Pasco has 500 cases and 16 deaths; Citrus has 140 cases and 12 deaths; Hernando has 135 cases and six deaths.
