ORLAND PARK, IL — Is that a party on Streamstown Court? A concert? Nope. Just an angry homeowner cranking music with revenge on their mind.
Orland Park Police Chief Eric Rossi has found himself mediating the noisy situation between a homeowner and a District 135 school. Frustrated by the sounds of musical instruments coming from a school playground, a homeowner nearby has taken to the airwaves to crank "vulgar" music in an attempt to get the school to remove them, Rossi said.
The conflict started with the relocation of District 135 Prairie Elementary School's playground in 2020, Rossi wrote in a release to residents. The playground includes features that allow children to play instruments. The owner of property on Streamstown Court adjacent to the playground went to the district about the resulting noise, Rossi said.
The owner, "expressed concerns to D135 regarding the noise generated by the musical elements indicating that the noise was interfering with their quality of life," Rossi said.
With the instruments still in place, the owner in recent weeks began playing loud music that "has included songs with vulgar content and language that is clearly not suitable for children," Rossi wrote.
Multiple noise complaints brought police to the property — each time, noise level was tested and it never exceeded that set by village code, Rossi said.
The owner's tactic worked, it seems — in the last week, the district removed all instruments except for a bell, Rossi wrote.
Neighborly communication can help solve disputes, Rossi said, but in this situation "has not produced positive results."
Rossi is "personally mediating this dispute, and I believe that a win-win resolution is within reach."
The homeowner has laid off the loud tunes for now, while District 135 explores a compromised solution.
