ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan apologized for a vulgar Twitter exchange with fellow baseball analyst Ben Verlander on Tuesday.

Passan, reporting on the Astros-Mariners ALDS opener, used a run being scored on Houston pitcher Justin Verlander — Ben’s brother — to take a shot at the Fox Sports analyst. The pair swapped swipes at one another, with Passan referencing his fellow reporter performing a sex act.

“Earlier, a tweet directed at @BenVerlander crossed the line and was hurtful to many,” the ESPN senior writer tweeted. “I deleted the tweet and sincerely apologize. Though Ben and I have known one another for a while and often joke on Twitter, it’s no excuse for my mistake. I will be better and learn from it.”

The exchange began after Passan mentioned the Astros hurler twice in one tweet and poked fun at the error.

“Justin Verlander Justin Verlander Justin Verlander just because I’m doing my best @BenVerlander impersonation,” Passan tweeted. “In which case Shohei Ohtani Shohei Ohtani Shohei Ohtani Shohei Ohtani Shohei Ohtani Shohei Ohtani Shohei Ohtani Shohei Ohtani Shohei Ohtani Shohei Ohtani Shohei Ohtani S”

“Grab a step stool and say it to my face Jeffey boy,” Ben Verlander, a well known fan of the Angels’ slugger/pitcher combo Shohei Ohtani, retorted, including an image of a Google search for Passan’s height, which showed 5-foot-9.

That’s when things went off the rails.

“When you’re talking about Shohei you’re usually on your knees, though, right?” Passan replied in a since-deleted tweet.

Verlander, 30, didn’t seem phased, however, once again returning to the subject of his brother.

“When you’re asking me for help getting a Justin interview you usually are too, huh??” he wrote.

It’s not the first time Passan and the younger Verlander sibling have gotten into it on Twitter. The pair traded barbs over a 2021 Twitter poll, with Verlander chiding Passan for not breaking the news his brother had re-signed with the Astros and Passan firing back with a “Here’s to nepotism?” quip.
