Reported cases of covid-19 and related deaths and hospitalizations continued their downward trend in Pennsylvania as the number of vaccinated residents marched upward.
Pennsylvania on Friday added 1,643 cases of covid-19, pulling the seven-day case average down to 1,892, the 14th consecutive drop for the average, according to data from the Department of Health. That’s the lowest seven-day average since it was 1,769 on Oct. 26. Of the new cases, 1,351 are confirmed and 292 are listed as probable. The state’s total is 1,182,922 cases since the pandemic began.
Allegheny County added 144 cases, dropping its seven-day average to 161, the lowest since Nov. 4 (159). Of the new cases, 129 were confirmed and 15 are probable. The new cases range in age from 1 year to 83 years.
The county has logged 99,853 covid cases to date.
Westmoreland County on Friday recorded 40 additional covid cases, more than Thursday’s 36 but still few enough to drop the seven-day average to 53, the lowest since Oct. 9 (47). Of the newly added cases, 36 are confirmed and four are probable. The county’s total is 33,547 since the start of the pandemic.
Health officials define a probable case as one in which a patient has a positive viral antigen test or covid symptoms with a “high-risk exposure” to someone who has been confirmed to have coronavirus.
Vaccinations
Pennsylvania has 6,866,823 people (53.6% of the population) protected by at least one dose of a covid-19 vaccine and 4,842,853 (37.8%) fully vaccinated, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of the portion of the population age 18 and older, 4,842,470 (47.6%) are fully vaccinated.
Allegheny has 703,300 people (57.5%) protected with at least one dose of covid-19 vaccine and 496,501 (40.6%) fully protected, according to the state Department of Health.
Westmoreland has 160,765 people (44%) with at least one dose of covid-19 vaccine and 123,905 (33.9%) completely vaccinated.
Deaths
The state on Friday added 27 deaths related to covid-19, according to data from the Department of Health. The seven-day average of deaths (230) continues its downward trend to a level not seen since mid-April. Of the 27 deaths newly reported Friday, 24 are from May and three are from April. There have been 26,724 covid-related deaths in the state since the pandemic began.
Allegheny County added two covid deaths, both from May, to bring the total to 1,914. One person was in their 50s and one in their 70s. The seven-day average is 18 deaths and has dropped for the fifth consecutive day.
Westmoreland County added a single new covid-related death, keeping with its trend of seeing just one, two or no deaths each day for more than two weeks. The county has recorded 753 deaths since the pandemic began.
Hospitalizations
There are 1,605 people in the state hospitalized for covid-19, a number that has been dropping steadily since mid-February. Friday was the 10th consecutive day with a double-digit drop in hospitalizations. There are 373 covid patients in intensive care units and 237 of those are on ventilators.
Allegheny County has 150 people hospitalized for covid-19 and 45 of them are in ICUs with 27 needing ventilators. The seven-day average of hospitalizations is 157, the lowest since late March. The county has recorded a total of 6,981 people in the hospital for covid.
Westmoreland has 26 covid patients hospitalized, with four of those people in ICUs and just two using ventilators.
