THE BBC has been branded 'disgusting and vulgar' for an upcoming Jimmy Savile drama about his infamous child abuse cover up.
It was announced earlier this week that The Reckoning, by award-winning writer Neil McKay and producer Jeff Pope, will reveal how the Jim'll Fix It star covered up his crimes.
It will follow his rise to fame and how his sexual abuse of young girls was kept under wraps until after his death in 2011, when he was exposed in an explosive ITV documentary.
However, the drama's announcement has received a backlash from the public, with many taking their outrage about the plans to Twitter.
One wrote: "The survivors of this vile man don’t need a permanent reminder of the trauma they endured… there’s ABSOLUTELY no “sensitivity or respect” for these people."
Another tweeted: "I’ll bet that in making this disgusting decision no thought was given to Savile’s many, many victims who are still alive. I wonder what their reaction will be? It’s a given that the BBC don’t care & don’t want to know."
A third added: "I think the whole idea of making a drama about Jimmy Savile is in very questionable taste. But for the BBC to be involved is just plain vulgar."
Explaining their reasons for developing the drama, Jeff said: "We must understand why a man like Savile seemed to remain immune for so long to proper scrutiny and criminal investigation.”
Controller of the BBC drama Pete Wenger added: "The story of Jimmy Savile is one of the most emotive and troubling of our times.
"We do not intend to sensationalise these crimes but to give voice to his victims.
"We will work with survivors to ensure their stories are told with sensitivity and respect and to examine the institutions which Jimmy Savile was associated with and the circumstances in which these crimes took place.
"Drama has the ability to tackle sensitive real-life subjects and consider the impact of a crime on its survivors and what lessons can be learnt to stop this ever happening again."
Savile was a popular DJ and TV presenter during his career, with him hosting Top of the Pops and presenting his own hit show, Jim'll Fix It.
However, he is now considered to be one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders after hundreds of sexual abuse allegations were made against him after his death aged 84.
