Police in Groton are investigating recently discovered vandalism in the town as a hate crime, authorities said over the weekend.
Law enforcement found graffiti at the Groton Country Club and several other places in the Middlesex County town early Sunday morning. Though the graffiti varied from location to location, police noted, some of it was racist and/or vulgar in nature.
“Therefore, we are investigating this as a hate crime, and any charges stemming from these incidents will be treated as such,” the Groton Police Department said in a Facebook post. “We have a team of dedicated officers currently investigating these incidents.”
The Groton Select Board wrote in a statement that the graffiti does not represent the community as a whole, but the vandalism “is painful evidence of the work we need to do as a community.”
Authorities have urged anyone who may have seen anything related to the graffiti to contact Det. Patrick Timmins. The department’s non-emergency phone number is (978) 448-5555.
Residents who have outdoor home surveillance technology were also asked by police to check their systems for Saturday night between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.
