MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Monongalia County Health Department along with county animal control officials are trying to gather up 20 feral cats that may have rabies.
The department sent out an alert Friday after receiving word that a suspected rabies case had been confirmed. The exposure occurred around June 30, officials said.
“We are advising area businesses and residences in the vicinity to be on the lookout for stray cats and to avoid them,” said Dr. Lee B. Smith, Monongalia County Health Department’s county health officer, said in a news release.
The alert has gone out to business owners and residents in the Distributor Drive area off of Green Bag Road.
Those who have been exposed are being told to seek treatment.
There are plans to drop wildlife rabies vaccines, bait, in the area in August in hopes of reducing the spread of rabies.
