THE EDITOR, Madam:
I have watched all of the State of the Nation debates in the Senate for the past three years and I have never witnessed the Senate sinking to an all-time low until Friday, June 16th, 2023, when the newly minted senator of the Jamaica Labour Party, Abka Fitz-Henley, used the Parliament to spew much of his political diatribe.
I have always enjoyed the debate and sometimes banter between members of the JLP and the PNP. I noticed that the JLP senators are always gracious in putting over their points of how the country is on a progressive trend, and they do so with much conviction and decency.
However, on Friday, in opening the debate, the new senator lambasted the Integrity Commission (IC) with accusations of hear-say and calling into question the skills and competence of members of the commission. If that was not all, the senator went further to accuse the IC of being politically biased against “his side”, the JLP.
Not to be outdone by this attack on the Integrity Commission, the senator, though not calling the leader of Opposition by name, went on to make disparaging remarks about him, and calling him a chameleon and that the people of Jamaica should not be fooled.
Overall, in all my watching of the debates, this was the most vulgar and disgraceful of them all. I want to say to the new senator that the people are watching, and we see him for the nasty vulgar debate that he intends to bring to the Upper House.
The prime minister did make a charge to his members to refrain from any attempt to tear down the Integrity Commission and to try and weaken it, but the contribution of the senator went against that.
The Senate sunk to an all-time low on Friday, and Fitz-Henley’s presentation at the opening was an utter disgrace and a poor representation of the millennial he claims to be representing.
Bring the debate above the fray, sir.
