MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health has been picked as a site for a phase three clinical trial meant to test the safety and efficacy of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for children.
UW Health officials announced its participation in the KidCOVE study Thursday morning, saying the pediatric trial will take place at American Family Children’s Hospital. Enrollment for a limited number of children between the ages of 6 months old and 11 years old will start Friday.
Participants will be grouped into three age groups: 6 months to less than 2 years old, 2 years old to less than 6 years old, and 6 years old to less than 12 years old. Nationwide, 4,000 children will be enrolled in each group, spread across 75 to 100 study sites in the U.S. and Canada. It’s unclear exactly how many kids will be able to enroll in the UW trial.
“Getting children vaccinated will help protect everyone and get us closer to mitigating this pandemic,” said Dr. William Hartman, co-principal investigator of the KidCOVE Study at UW. “This vaccine is identical to the one given to adults today, but this trial will help us determine the correct dosage for kids.”
The trial is set to last 14 months with four follow-up appointments during that time. Participating kids will need to be screened prior to enrollment. Kids chosen will either get the vaccine or a placebo, but they won’t know which.
To date, more than 4 million children have contracted COVID-19, and more than 300 have died from their infections.
