Michigan reported a two-day total of 2,786 new coronavirus cases - an average of 1,393 a day - and 24 deaths for Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 10 and 11.

Of the new deaths, 12 were identified in a review of death certificates, done three times a week, and the case count represents new referrals of confirmed cases to the Michigan Disease Surveillance System since the last web update on Monday, Aug. 9.

As of this week, the state is posting COVID-19 case and testing data three days a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Michigan previously was updating the data twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The state is averaging 1,138 new cases and five new deaths per day over the last week, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 916,006 reported coronavirus cases and 19,982 confirmed deaths. Additionally, the state has reported 108,997 probable cases and 1,270 probable deaths, in which a physician and/or antigen test ruled it COVID-19 but no confirmatory PCR test, which detects the presence of a virus, was done.

Of Michigan’s 83 counties, 76 reported new cases Tuesday and/or Wednesday. Topping the list was Wayne with 458, followed by Oakland with 439 and Macomb with 235. Other top-reporting counties included Kent (197), Kalamazoo (101), Washtenaw (90), Genesee (81), Ottawa (78), Saginaw (72) and Ingham (72).

Thirteen counties reported at least one death in the same span, led by Wayne with seven, Oakland with three and Macomb, St. Clair and Charlevoix with two each.

Below is a color-coded map that shows the percentage of people 12 and older who have received a COVID-19 vaccine in Michigan. As of Tuesday, 59% of eligible state residents had received at least one dose.

As of Wednesday, Hospitals statewide were treating 859 patients with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19, with 181 patients in the ICU. That’s up from 752 COVID-19 patients two days ago.

Of the 20,788 diagnostic tests processed on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 6.5% came back positive for SARS-CoV-2. The seven-day average is now 7.0%, up from 6.6% about a week ago.

The chart below shows new cases for the past 30 days based on onset of symptoms. In this chart, numbers for the most recent days are incomplete because of the lag time between people getting sick and getting a confirmed coronavirus test result, which can take up to a week or more.

The seven-day average of deaths in the state remains in the single digits, as it has since early July. It was down Wednesday from a seven-day average of six on Aug. 3.
