An Alabama veterans facility will be among the first 37 in the country to receive the coronavirus vaccine.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs included the Birmingham VA Health Care System on its initial distribution list. The 37 locations are spread out throughout the country, officials said.

“VA is well prepared and positioned to begin COVID-19 vaccinations,” said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. “Our ultimate goal is to offer it to all veterans and employees who want to be vaccinated.”

The vaccinations, once approved by federal officials, will be given to front-line VA healthcare workers and veterans residing in the facilities’ long-term care units. Vaccinations for veterans will be allotted based on factors such as age, existing health problems and other considerations, including the risk of severe illness or death from COVID.

The facilities were selected based on their ability to serve large number of people and store the vaccines at extremely cold temperatures. Once the vaccines are administered, the VA sites will monitor patients and staff for side effects and report all data directly to the Centers for Disease Control.

In addition to the Birmingham location, here is a list of VA facilities receiving the vaccine:
