FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - The nation's top infectious disease expert says Indiana is one of seven states that needs to be on alert regarding a possible surge in COVID-19 cases.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told Bloomberg in a new interview that those states, in particular, should ramp up their vigilance for the Labor Day weekend.

“There are several states that are at risk for surging, namely North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Arkansas, Missouri, Indiana, Illinois,” Fauci said. “Those states are starting to see an increase in the percent positive of their testing; that is generally predictive that there’s going to be a problem.”

Bloomberg notes that the number of new infections nationwide is on a downward trend right now, but the number of deaths reported daily remains at about 1,000.

In Indiana, a new color-coded mapping system was launched this week, based on key metrics for each county.

The statewide confirmed "total" positivity rate began to rise with the arrival of summer. before stabilizing in the 6-to-7 percent range. In the past two weeks, it has edged down and is now at 5.6 percent.

However, the newly reported confirmed case count shows a positivity rate of 7.4 percent. That metric is used to identify unique individuals who test positive for COVID-19.

The 7.4 percent rate represented data from the past 7 days.
