Rabbi of Technion synagogue says institute's gay pride events express 'vulgarity' - Haaretz

The rabbi of the synagogue at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology – called for students who oppose the activities of the LGBTQ organization at the university to “take responsibility on campus.”

Rabbi Dr. Elad Dukov, a faculty member of the Technion, said in the synagogue’s WhatsApp group that a party organized by the LGBTQ community is an expression of “vulgarity and crudity,” and praised students who founded what he called “a group for practical action” against activities of the LGBTQ community at the Technion.

Last week, a student who is a member of said group spoke out against what he called the “LGBTQ-ization of the Technion,” because of a party organized by the LGBTQ community. Dukov encouraged the students in the group to join another group named the “Guardians of the Family,” whose goal is to act against LGBTQ events on campus – and accused the organizers of the party of violence.

“Insistence on the Jewish spirit on these issues is not easy, and [with God’s blessing], over the years we have succeeded in protecting the campus as much as possible,” wrote Dukov. He also said that the party was held on the evening of Holocaust Remembrance Day, even though it was held on Tuesday evening.

Dukov didn't respond to Haaretz's inquiries. The Technion management condemned his statements. "Dr. Dukov’s statements are in complete contradiction to the spirit of the Technion, which espouses equality and the acceptance of every person unrelated to their social, national, religious and gender identity. His statements are his own personal opinion only, and we completely reject them.”

The Technion’s management said it views any organizing of a group against other students as a “violent and unacceptable act, and condemns it in every way. Students, employees and faculty from all communities, including the LGBTQ community, study and work at the Technion, and we are proud of it. The Technion is determined to continue and serve as an example and a model of tolerance and inclusion in Israeli society.”

The Aguda – Israel’s LGBTQ Task Force and Achva – the LGBTQ Student’s Association in Israel said: “It is intolerable for the LGBTQ community at the university to not feel safe, and it is inconceivable that a university employee will take advantage of his position and incite in a violent manner against an entire community time after time. We call on the management of the Technion not to make do with a condemnation and to impose significant sanctions on Rabbi Dukov.”

The Achva organization at the Technion said they were “shocked and ardently condemn the statements.”

The Technion students' union also condemned Dukov's comments and said the matter was passed on to the higher ranks at the institute and that the union "will work to have significant action taken as soon as possible."

In 2018, Dukov was one of over 200 rabbis who signed a letter criticizing pro-LGBTQ organizations. The letter referred to them as “deviants.” In the letter, the rabbis protested what they called the violent actions and “terror” of the LGBTQ organizations, which they describe as the silencing of others and harsh attacks against anyone who “supports the family.” “The aggressive terror, accompanied by media brainwashing morning and night, which attempts to prepare hearts and minds as if there was some idea of ‘family’ here and destroy the idea of the family and turn the deviants into heroes, will not succeed, as will the attempt to silence the rabbis and sane people and present them as eccentrics and extremists,” said the letter.
