The Oregon Health Authority on Saturday announced 1,643 new confirmed or presumptive coronavirus cases as well as 28 new deaths, pushing to total death toll to at least 1,603 during the pandemic.
The vast majority of the people reported dead were in their 80s or 90s — and one person was 100 years old. Three people in their 70s died and one person in their 60s succumbed to COVID-19 complications, according to the state.
State health officials also reported 8,768 vaccine doses were administered to Oregonians on Friday, and another 4,680 were administered on previous days but were added to the state’s database Friday. Those figures mean Oregon has so far administered 34% of its current vaccine supply, a 5% increase from earlier this week.
On Friday, Gov. Kate Brown announced she had tasked the National Guard with assisting in a Salem Health vaccine drive — a move that is expected to help the state achieve its goal of administering 12,000 vaccine doses per day.
Oregon is one of many states struggling to administer vaccines as quickly as residents are desiring due to a combination of factors, including the reliance on hospital systems to provide the doses, a lack of trained individuals to administer the vaccines and the reliance on a tiered approach that looks to inoculate hundreds of thousands of healthcare workers before the rest of the state’s population.
The state hopes to hit its 12,000-per-day vaccine goal by the end of next week.
December was the deadliest month of the pandemic thus far, with at least 472 deaths, which is nearly as much as the first six months of the pandemic combined.

Who’s in the hospital: As of Saturday, there were 421 people hospitalized with COVID-19 throughout the state, a decrease of 30 from Friday’s total. Eighty-one people are in an intensive care unit due to COVID-19, which is seven fewer than on Friday.
Since it began: Oregon has reported 124,490 confirmed or presumed infections and 1,603 deaths — among the lowest totals in the nation. To date, the state has reported 2.8 million lab reports from tests.
