The members of a group charged with "promoting corruption and promiscuity in native clothes" are under arrest, Islamic Republic Judiciary official Hossein Negin Taji, from the province of Kohgilouyeh and Boyer Ahmad, said on Friday, September 11.
Without referring to the number of the people arrested, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)-linked news agency, Tasnim, cited Negin Taji as saying, "The detainees were promoting the 'vulgar Western culture' by 'producing decadent video clips.'"
Furthermore, Negin Taji maintained that these people were engaged in producing "vulgar photos and videos and clips containing nudity" and circulating them on the Internet. They were all arrested in operation coordinated with the Islamic Republic's Ministry of Intelligence, he said.
However, Negin Taji has not explained how people dressed in traditional Iranian garments promoted a Western lifestyle.
In recent years, several Instagram pages have been established showing Luri dancing and singing, featuring clips of theprovince's folk dances, music, and songs.
Lurs (Lors) belong to an ancient Iranian tribe living mainly in three western and south-western provinces of Lorestan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari; Kohgilouyeh and Boyer Ahmad; and the oil-rich Khuzestan. With a population of around five million, they are renowned for their folk dance and songs across Iran.
In recent years, the Islamic Republic Judiciary officials and intelligence agents have intensified their efforts to crack down on people, especially women, who are active in dancing, modeling, and singing on Instagram.
