PORTLAND, Ore. — The first case of the new variant of COVID-19 has been identified in Oregon.

Oregon Health Authority learned of the discovery on Friday. The case is a Multnomah County resident with no known travel history. Health officials are working to determine the source of the infection.

The new COVID-19 virus strain was originally detected in the United Kingdom. It has since been detected in several U.S. states, including California.

“The detection of the first case of this variant strain is a concern, and we have been monitoring movement of this strain,” said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, health officer and state epidemiologist at OHA. “As we learn more about this case and the individual who tested positive for this strain, OHA continues to promote effective public health measures, including wearing masks, maintaining six feet of physical distance, staying home, washing your hands, and avoiding gatherings and travel.”

More information continues to come to light regarding this new strain as well as another variant first found in South Africa.
