State health officials on Saturday announced another 1,010 confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases as well as two more deaths, bringing the state’s death toll to 1,492 since the pandemic began and its total caseload to 116,348 cases.
State corrections officials also on Saturday announced another death of an inmate who had tested positive for COVID-19 at the Two Rivers Correctional Institute in Umatilla. The man, whose age was reported as being between 50 and 60 years old, is the 23rd inmate to die after testing positive.
Vaccine administration continues to lag in Oregon as it does across the nation. State health officials said 190,500 doses have been delivered across Oregon. Yet just 45,295 doses have been administered, meaning that about 76% of the vaccines distributed have not yet been given.
The corrections department told staff this week that it had administered 400 doses of the Moderna vaccine. More rounds of vaccinations won’t begin until Jan. 11 because of vaccine shipment schedules, the department said.
The Oregon Health Authority said that statewide it recorded 880 vaccine doses being administered Friday, including 419 doses administered Friday and 461 earlier shots that had not yet been recorded. All the vaccinations happened at hospitals, long-term care facilities, EMS agencies, urgent care facilities and local health departments, the agency said.

New COVID deaths
Oregon’s 1,491st COVID-19 death is a 75-year-old woman in Hood River County who tested positive on Dec. 19 and died Jan. 1 at her residence. She had underlying conditions.
Oregon’s 1,492nd COVID-19 death is a 95-year-old woman in Douglas County who tested positive on Dec. 31 and died on Dec. 31 at Mercy Medical Center. Presence of underlying conditions is being confirmed.
COVID-19 hospitalizations
The number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 across Oregon is 468, 2 more than Friday. There are 109 COVID-19 patients in intensive care unit (ICU) beds, no change from Friday.
