The Oregon Health Authority on Wednesday reported 305 new coronavirus cases and two more deaths, marking the fifth time in seven days with at least 300 cases.
The daily average for the past week has now surpassed 300. Oregon’s rolling average hasn’t been that high since Aug. 10. But it still remains below the state’s summer peak average of just under 350 daily cases.
The state on Wednesday also released its latest weekly report outlining outbreaks. Of note, the state has identified coronavirus cases involving people at 14 schools with in-person learning, nine more than the previous week.
The new cases are at: South Medford High School (one staff/volunteer); Hedrick Middle School in Medford (one staff/volunteer); Nyssa High School (one student, five staff/volunteers); Nyssa Middle School (four staff/volunteers); Nyssa Elementary School (one student; one staff/volunteer); Four Rivers Community School in Ontario (four staff/volunteers); Kennedy Elementary in Medford (one staff/volunteer); Amity Elementary School (one student); and Roosevelt Elementary School (one staff/volunteer).
In addition, Sutherlin East Elementary School added one new student case since last week.
In all, the state has reported 32 cases linked to schools, with 23 among staff or volunteers and nine among students.
Where the new cases are by county: Baker (3), Benton (4), Clackamas (22), Columbia (7), Coos (6), Crook (1), Deschutes (11), Douglas (3), Jackson (21), Jefferson (1), Josephine (6), Klamath (2), Lake (1), Lane (53), Lincoln (1), Linn (31), Malheur (5), Marion (25), Morrow (1), Multnomah (43), Polk (3), Tillamook (5), Umatilla (13), Wallowa (2), Wasco (4), Washington (26) and Yamhill (5).
New fatalities: Oregon’s 582nd death linked to coronavirus is an 86-year-old Washington County man with underlying health conditions. He tested positive Sept. 24 and died Oct. 5 at his residence.
The 583rd fatality is a 69-year-old Deschutes County woman with underlying medical conditions. She tested positive Aug. 26 and died Oct. 5 at St. Charles Medical Center.
Not yet included in the Oregon Health Authority’s official fatality count is an inmate at Snake River Correctional Institution who died Oct. 6, according to the Department of Corrections. He was between the age of 70 and 80 years old and is the 13th inmate statewide to die after testing positive for coronavirus.
The prevalence of infections: State officials reported 268 new confirmed infections out of 5,144 people tested, equaling a 5.2% positivity rate.
Who got infected: New confirmed or presumed infections grew among the following age groups: 0-9 (22); 10-19 (37); 20-29 (73); 30-39 (57); 40-49 (35); 50-59 (24); 60-69 (18); 70-79 (13); 80 and older (13).
Who’s in the hospital: The state Wednesday reported 129 Oregonians with confirmed coronavirus infections are currently in the hospital, up two from Tuesday. Oregon remains well below its capacity, with hundreds of hospital beds and ventilators available.
Since it began: Oregon has reported 35,634 confirmed or presumed infections and 583 deaths, among the lowest totals in the nation. To date, 716,777 Oregonians have been tested.
