Massachusetts health officials on Saturday said 290 new cases of coronavirus have been detected and 17 more people have died from illness related to the virus.

So far during the pandemic, the state has seen 110,077 cases of coronavirus and 8,406 deaths, according to data released by the Department of Public Health.

“Due to ongoing delays in the reporting of test results to DPH, the case count today appears higher than usual. However, these positive test results have been assigned retrospectively to the appropriate date of test,” read a note from DPH attached to the data.

Saturday’s new cases are based on 12,595 new molecular tests. A total of 1,553,550 molecular tests have been administered in Massachusetts.

As of Saturday, 369 people are hospitalized in Massachusetts with coronavirus, according to DPH.

The state’s positive test rate stands at 2.1% based on a seven-day weighted average. In mid-July, the average was at 1.7%. State officials said this week the slight increase may be the result of several “small clusters” of cases linked to recent gatherings.

Gov. Charlie Baker said this week that officials would review the state’s guidance on public gathering sizes following the increased case counts from recent gatherings.

New travel restrictions went into place Saturday, which required people visiting Massachusetts from outside New England, New York, New Jersey or Hawaii to quarantine or present proof of a negative coronavirus test to avoid a fine of $500 per day. Massachusetts residents traveling beyond New England, New Jersey, New York or Hawaii will also have to quarantine for 14 days upon return to the state or face similar penalties.

Free testing offered through the “Stop the Spread” campaign is ongoing in Chelsea, Everett, Fall River, Lawrence, Lowell, Lynn, Marlborough, New Bedford, Agawam, Brockton, Methuen, Randolph, Revere, Springfield, Taunton and Worcester.

Across the country, states continue to see surges of new cases. Officials in Missouri, Wisconsin and Illinois are bringing back strict restrictions as the virus spreads through the Midwest, the New York Times reported.
