More than 70,000 people in Wisconsin have tested positive for COVID-19 since March.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services announced 950 new confirmed cases of the virus on Saturday, bringing the state's total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 70,009.

The percent of positive COVID-19 cases continues to rise in Wisconsin, even though fewer tests are being processed. Saturday's positive cases made up 10.9% of the 8,700 test results reported by the state health department. The seven-day average for positive tests stood at 8.2%.

The state health department also reported Saturday that 13 more people have died, bringing Wisconsin's total number of deaths to 1,081.

Of the 70,009 Wisconsin residents who have tested positive since the pandemic began:

  • 60,933, or 87.1%, are considered "recovered" by DHS, meaning either there is documented proof their symptoms have resolved or it's been 30 days since their diagnosis.
  • 7,977, or 11.4%, are considered "active," meaning they aren't "recovered" and haven't died.
  • 1,081, or 1.5%, have died.
  • At least 5,545, or 7.9% of all people who have tested positive for COVID-19, have been hospitalized, although DHS doesn't know in about a third of confirmed COVID-19 cases whether the infected person was ever admitted to a hospital.

As of Friday afternoon, 350 people with COVID-19 were hospitalized and 119 of them were in intensive care, according to DHS. An additional 190 patients were hospitalized awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test.

The department of health's weekly ratings of county COVID-19 activity — which are based on a combination of total new cases per 100,000 people over the past two weeks and the percent change in new cases between the past seven days and the seven days before that — are as follows:

  • High: Adams, Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Brown, Buffalo (up), Burnett, Calumet, Chippewa, Clark, Columbia, Crawford, Dane, Dodge, Door, Douglas, Dunn, Eau Claire, Florence, Fond du Lac, Grant, Green, Green Lake (up), Iowa, Iron, Jackson, Juneau (up), Kenosha, Kewaunee, La Crosse, Lafayette, Langlade, Manitowoc, Marathon, Marinette, Menominee, Milwaukee, Oconto, Oneida, Outagamie, Ozaukee, Pepin (up), Pierce, Portage, Price, Racine, Rock, Sauk, Sawyer, Shawano, Sheboygan, St. Croix, Taylor, Trempealeau, Vernon, Vilas, Walworth, Washburn, Washington, Waukesha, Waupaca, Waushara, Winnebago and Wood
  • Medium: Forest, Lincoln, Marquette (down), Monroe (down), Polk (down), Richland (down) and Rusk (down)

Parentheses reflect a change in the activity level from the previous week's rating.

Globally, more than 23 million cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, with nearly a quarter of them, 5.6 million, in the United States. More than 175,800 Americans have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
