Amazon has removed vulgar shirts mocking Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his running mate, California Sen. Kamala Harris.
USA Today reports at least one third-party seller, The Oxygen Bandit, was offering T-shirts, tank tops, hoodies and sweatshirts with a parody of Biden’s campaign logo saying “Joe and the Hoe.” The name of the gardening tool is slang for a derogatory word against women.
The products ranged in price from $24.99 to $42.99.
CNN reports Demetria Edwards, an Arkansas attorney, sent an email to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Tuesday asking for the removal of the “racist, sexist and offensive merchandise” that were a “reprehensible attempt to demean, devalue, denigrate and degrade” Biden and Harris. Some social media users also slammed the company on Twitter and Facebook, threatening to cancel their Amazon Prime memberships.
The company said Wednesday it was working to remove the items, though some users have reported still seeing them.
“All sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who do not will be subject to action including potential removal of their account. We are working to remove these products,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement.
According to Newsweek, “Joe and the Hoe” started as an online meme that gained momentum when conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh referred to the vice presidential candidate as a “ho” on Friday, claiming without evidence she worked as an “escort” who “slept her way” into politics.
Limbaugh, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Donald Trump in February, is a longtime Republican who has frequently voiced support for Trump.
Amazon and other online retail brands have previously faced criticism for products from third-party sellers, including “Slavery Gets S--- Done” baby clothes in 2018 and “Daddy’s Little Slut” children’s shirts last year. Amazon’s online marketplace, which includes third-party sellers, accounts for as much as 44% of the U.S. e-commerce market.
