Cambridge police are apologizing to Congressman Joe Kennedy III after a vulgar comment about the U.S. Senate candidate was tweeted from the department’s account.
The offending tweet, posted Sunday, stated: “Another liberal (expletive) jerk who just happens to be better than the clown he’s running against. Sad for us.”
The tweet was in response to Kennedy’s televised comments about personal protective equipment for health care workers and first responders. Kennedy was quoted as saying the distribution of PPE around the country was “embarrassing.”
Kennedy’s spokesman could not be immediately reached Monday morning.
The 39-year-old Newton Democrat is locked in a battle for U.S. Senate against incumbent Sen. Ed Markey, who is 73. The two face off in the state primary Sept. 1. Polls have them locked in a tight race.
Cambridge cops took the tweet down and followed it up with an apology and a promise that the rogue “member of the Cambridge Police” will be disciplined.
That staffer, the cops said, “inadvertently posted political commentary on the department account rather than their personal account, that was inappropriate, unprofessional and disrespectful.
“While the post was quickly removed, the concerning statements cannot be erased,” Cambridge cops added. “These actions do not reflect the professionalism that we as a department take great pride in & we want to sincerely apologize to the Congressman and those individuals the statement was directed at.”
Kennedy also came under attack this weekend from Bristol Sheriff Thomas Hodgson who blasted the congressman for “playing politics” with a flare-up at the county jail after illegal immigrants refused to be tested for coronavirus and fought guards, causing $25,000 in damage.

Earlier this afternoon, a member of the Cambridge Police, who has access to the Department’s Twitter account, inadvertently posted political commentary on the department account rather than their personal account, that was inappropriate, unprofessional and disrespectful.
